Celtic rightly scrap Danny Simpson trial

Celtic have reportedly pulled the plug on offering a trial to former Leicester City full back Danny Simpson after the signing of Israeli defender Hatem Abd Elhamed nears completion.

Simpson was due to start a trial at Lennoxtown on Monday, but there was a huge negative backlash against the convicted domestic abuser being offered a chance to win a deal with the Scottish champions and now the club have pulled the plug on the trial.

It is expected that Elhamed will be Celtic’s first choice right back this season, after Mikael Lustig’s contract expired and he made a move to Gent in Belgium, with Simpson seen to be more of a back up to the Israeli international.

But with the trial offered to the 32-year-old now binned, Lennon will turn to alternative targets as potential cover to the Israeli ahead of Wednesday’s Champions League qualifier against Estonian side Nomme Kalju.

The decision to kill off any hope of Simpson winning a contract with Celtic is the correct one by the club and we move on.
