Celtic sign Manchester United youngster Lee O'Connor

Celtic have signed highly-rated youngster Lee O’Connell from Manchester United on a four year deal.

The 19-year-old is a versatile defender capable of playing anywhere across the back line, but recently featured as a right back for the United U23 side.

Speaking exclusively to the official Celtic website, Lee O'Connor said: “It feels surreal at the moment but I’m just looking forward to getting the international break over with and then starting with Celtic.

“I found out last weekend about Celtic’s interest, and it went from there. Today was a bit hectic but I’m just glad to get it through before the window shuts.

“The Irish squad met up this morning and I spoke to the manager, Stephen Kenny, and he was fine about me coming here today. I’ll meet up them again tomorrow for training.

“I’m a versatile player. I can play anywhere across the back four or midfield if needed. I’d say that I’m a wholehearted defender. I love defending and tackling, but I like to get forward as well. First and foremost, though, I am a defender.”

O’Connor has been with the Old Trafford side since 2016 and was considered a real first team prospect, including being listed in their Champions League squad last season.

He captained Ireland at the recent U19 European Championships this summer helping them to the semi finals and was named in the U21 squad for the upcoming qualifiers.

Celtic’s signing of O’Connor is a major coup for the Scottish champions and he joins fellow Irish U19 teammate Jonathan Afolabi at the club - after he signed for Neil Lennon’s side a couple of weeks ago.
