Celtic linked with Copenhagen full back Peter Ankersen

Following the departure of Mikael Lustig to KAA Gent, Celtic are being heavily linked with FC Copenhagen full back Peter Ankersen to replace the departed Swedish international.

Celtic are currently light on full back options, especially in the right back position with only Anthony Ralston in the squad as a dedicated right back. So with Celtic kicking off their season away to FK Sarajevo in the Champions League at the start of next month, it is imperative that the Scottish champions and their new Director of Football Nick Hammond sign a full back that would walk straight into the team.

Despite having one season left on his contract, Ankersen has told Copenhagen he wants to leave this summer and that has peaked Celtic’s interest in the 28-year-old, who had previously been linked with moves to Leicester City, Newcastle United, Marseille, Valencia and Galatasaray over the past couple of years.

Ankersen started his professional career at Rosenborg BK, before being sold to Esbjerg - the club he started as a youth player - on a four year deal. He was an integral part of the side that won promotion to the Danish Superliga, and subsequently won the Danish Cup and finished 4th in the league the following season.

In January 2014, he was signed by RB Salzburg after impressing against them in the Europa League group stages. Just over a year later, he was loaned to FC Copenhagen before signing permanently in the summer of 2016.

He has amassed a total of 150 games during his time with the Danish side, scoring nine times, and has won three SuperLiga titles and two Danish Cups since season 2015-16.

The Dane has won 22 caps for the national team and was named in Denmark’s preliminary 35-man squad for the 2018 World Cup in Russia. However, he did not make the final 23.
