Celtic to face Slavia Prague if they beat Cluj in Champions League qualifier

Celtic will face Slavia Prague in this season’s Champions League play-off round if they manage to knock out CFR Cluj.

Neil Lennon’s side could have faced BSC Young Boys, Slavia Prague or the winners of the games between APOEL and Qarabag, and Maribor and Rosenborg.

Celtic avoided being paired with Rosenborg again, but will face a daunting tie against the Czech champions - with the first tie at home set to be played on the 20th/21st August, before the return leg in Czechia on the 27th/28th August.

Slavia Prague finished second in Group C in last season’s Europa League competition in a group including Zenit, Bordeaux and FC Copenhagen. They progressed past Genk in the knock out phase of the competition winning 4-1 on aggregate before beating Sevilla in the Last 16 after extra time.

But their Europa League run ended in the quarter finals against Chelsea losing 5-3 on aggregate.

Cluj are a step up from Celtic’s previous opponents on Nomme Kalju and that will be a tough test in itself, while the play-off against Slavia Prague is arguably the toughest tie the Scottish champions could face and they will need to be on top of their game if they are to qualify for the group stages.
