Mikael Lustig reportedly warned Celtic off signing Rangers new boy

Just days after Rangers unveiled new signing Filip Helander as Steven Gerrard’s most expensive signing during his time at the Ibrox club, it appears that Celtic had their eye on the Swedish defender first, but were warned off him by Mikael Lustig.

Helander joined Rangers last week in a deal worth up to £3.5 million and was quickly labelled as the bargain of the summer by Gerrard and that he is a carbon copy of former Celtic defender Virgil van Dijk.

But it appears fellow Swedish team mate Mikael Lustig doesn’t have the same belief in his international team mate as Rangers do.

According to Gerry Collins, a RockSport football pundit, Celtic were looking at the new Rangers signing - after he was frozen out at Bologna - and sought information on the Swede from Mikael Lustig, who left the Scottish champions at the end of last season.

But Lustig reportedly warned Celtic off signing Helander.

Collins claimed: “I hate to be gloom and doom but I believe that and this has come from a good source for me, I believe that Celtic were mentioned and they went to Mikael Lustig about it.

“And they asked Mikael Lustig ‘is it right for Celtic?’ and he said no.”

Following Lustig’s comments, Celtic quickly moved on from the Swede and signed Toulouse defender Christopher Jullien for around £7 million - the second most expensive transfer signing in Celtic’s history.

So while Helander ticked all of Gerrard’s boxes, it appears that the former second string Bologna defender could not tick a single box for the Scottish champions and his own international teammate.
